Sailing has been Captain Howard's passion since he was a teenager. Reading all the classic stories about crossing oceans in small sail boats inflamed his desire to do the same thing. Joshua Slocum was the first to sail around the world single handed (alone) in 1898. From the 1920's through the '50's, there were dozens of famous sailors to follow in his wake, some with and without crew, and they produced fantastic tales, many now very well known. Names like Vito Dumas, Herbert Blondie Hasler, Eric and Susan Hiscock, and later Ann Davison and Lin and Larry Pardey wrote of their colorful adventures and can still provide sailors great reading pleasure.
Over the years, Howard has crossed the oceans a number of times, first by himself in his 30' sloop "Ereva" from Long Beach to Hawaii. He has sailed the Hawaiian Islands, and most of the Pacific from Canada to Central America to New Zealand and Australia. He holds a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer Master license for 50 tons, sail and power.
For almost 25 years Stephanie, the Admiral, and Howard have sailed together visiting hundreds of islands, some in very remote and intriguing places. They planned and then built a sail boat, Holy Grail together over the course of eight years, and now operate Sail Holy Grail, providing private charters. Combined, they have sailed about 120,000 miles.
When not sailing or building boats, the couple earned their living first in the restaurant business over many years and then as certified organic coffee farmers in Kona.
They look forward to welcoming you aboad Holy Grail with genuine Hawaiian hospitality!
